There has been a stigma placed on society that unfortunately has yet to be lifted. People young, old, considered “thin” or “skinny,” considered “fat”or “overweight” are all concerned with their weight and how they look to others. Gone are the days when you could just eat whatever you wanted and no one judged you for it. Watching carbohydrates, counting calories and daily weigh-ins now consume the lives of people trying to attain the “perfect figure,” whatever that is. There are various dieting techniques that are used to lose weight, which are considered both, helpful as well as harmful.

A basic definition of a diet is a selection of food. For a person with a weight loss goal, a diet really means, “Food that I can eat to help me lose weight in the shortest amount of time. Dieting can be fun, it can be successful and it can be extremely challenging.

Healthy eating is a foolproof diet that most people have tried at what time or another, but eventually felt it was just too tedious to continue. Eating 6-11 daily servings from the bread, cereal, rice & pasta group, 2-4 daily servings from the fruit group, 2-3 servings daily from the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs & nuts group, 3-5 daily servings from the vegetable group, 2- 3 daily servings from the dairy group and the occasional fats, oil & sweets, can be just too much for one person to handle. Not to mention, you still have to measure what the average person’s portion should be while consuming the food. This could be absolutely frustrating and leave you hungry.

Dieting can be very expensive. It is much easier to buy the foods that are not good for you than to shop for what is considered the healthiest choice. You go into the supermarket now with an edited grocery list to include: extra lean meats, wheat instead of white bread, olive oil instead of butter, more fruits and vegetables, water (you can get this from the faucet) and other foods you would not normally eat, and you leave the supermarket broke. There is a fine price to pay for a slim figure.

You can also choose an already made diet. What I mean by an already made diet is picking up a diet already created by someone where there are documented success stories. Someone who loves sandwiches might want to try eating from the Subway sandwich franchise more frequently. Another person might want to try the south beach diet or the Atkins diet. Whatever diet you choose, be sure that you are ready for it because they require an entire lifestyle change. Remember that your dieting success is not completely measured by how much you put into your mouth or what you put into your mouth, it is also measured by how badly you want to accomplish your set weight loss goal.
